Fender Speaker Replacement

Introduction

A friend called me regarding his Deluxe Reverb. Something was wrong. Low frequency notes were breaking up badly and vibrating the whole amplifier. It sounded like the speaker cone might be packing it in.
We shone a bright flashlight through the speaker grill and looked at the speaker from the reverse side. We could see the light shining through a 10 cm long slit between the surround and the cone in one area. A new speaker was ordered and installed 3 weeks later. This is the third cone failure we have seen in an old Jensen speaker in 2 years.

A replacement speaker was ordered from a local Fender dealer. It was in the Fender catalog as an Eminence brand and cost him 40 dollars. He will keep the old Jensen and perhaps have it reconed one day.

It appears someone had tried to repair an early tear in the paper cone. The paper was sure brittle. There was a crack in the dust cap as well. You could see water marks on the cone in a few places.

Some pressure on the cone better reveals the crack.

This speaker cone is history.

The speaker identification information. Some people dislike this particular speaker. It is quite bright sounding. I find many guitarists to be very particular. Even the brand of germanium transistor in their cheesy fuzz box matters!

Reverse view. You have to unbolt and remove the chassis to get at the 2 top bolts which anchor the speaker.
